Today students made their mailboxes to house the Valentines they'll receive tomorrow. This is a very creative group of students who can take an ordinary item (i.e. construction paper) and make it extraordinary.

Division Strategies

Today students worked hard at using their division strategies. These strategies include: repeated subtraction, related multiplication, arrays, pictures (grouping and sharing), and skip counting. They did a great job of making strategies for equations and vice versa.

Our math pods today were based on our division strategies. We have been using pictures, equations, arrays and repeated subtraction to show division. Today we practice these concepts and our facts on the smartboard, using Destination Math and through a paper-and-pencil activity. The more we practice, the better we get!! :)

In math we are in the process of learning different strategies to solve division equations. Today we worked on repeated subtraction. We had a blast using counters (concrete learning) and writing equations on our desks using whiteboard markers.

To Magnetize or Not

Students experimented with making magnets today. They used a magnet to try and magnetize other objects. As a group we discovered that some metal objects can be magnetized (scissors, nails) while others cannot (pennies, nickels, pop can tabs).

Today some of us had a guest teacher for our teacher led pod during language arts pods. Mrs. Helfrich (a grade 8 teacher from our school) came and worked with us while our teacher did some reading testing. If was fun to have a different teacher for awhile. She did a great job reading and discussing with us. Thank you Mrs. Helfrich!! :)

Our class will be joining 23 others from the US and Australia to create a piece of artwork together. Each classroom in our group is given a numbered piece from the whole artwork to colour and then send on (1 per classroom). As you can see the black & white version of our bulletin board is up ready to swap out pieces for the coloured ones we'll receive.

Great Canadian Mail Race

Today most students finished their letters for the Great Canadian Mail Race. We received a letter two days ago from a student and his teacher from Dauphin, MB inviting us to partake in this race. It sounded like a lot of fun and an interesting way to keep students writing letters. So students wrote letters about themselves and posed questions to their recipients. Today they chose a province and a town from which we found an elementary school to send their letter to. It will be exciting to see who gets a response back and when. Some of our letters are headed to Snow Lake, MB - Tuktoyaktuk, NWT - Rocky Mountain House, AB - Summerside, PEI.

Today marked the first day of our quadblogging experience (see partner schools on right hand side of blog). It was really exciting to see all the comments that were left for us. Students went to the computer lab and had the opportunity to read through all the comments that were left along with took a look at the school websites from the classes that we're partnered with. As a whole class, we were able to make a few comments back. I really look forward to partaking in this opportunity with my students.

One of our strategies for multiplying is making arrays. Students learned what arrays are, how to make an array for an equation, and how to make an equation from an array. Here is an example from today's class:

Students painted their winter scenes today. Yesterday they drew trees in winter (without leaves) and coloured an evening/early morning sky (using reds, yellows, oranges, etc.). They then painted snow on their trees, in the sky and on the ground as if snow had fallen as was still falling to blanket their picture.

The students have diligently been working on solving problems in math lately. We have been working on following a specific steps to solve accurately:

1) Read the problem
2) Highlight the important info you know
3) Circle the question you need to answer
4) Choose a strategy; The few we have looked at so far are:
*Look for a Pattern
*Make a table or chart
*Draw a picture
*Add or Subtract
5) Do your chosen strategy
6) Check your work
7) Answer with a sentence
8) Solve another way (use another strategy to prove you are correct)
9) Extend the problem and solution

There are a few other steps (communicating what we did to solve the problem and making connections) that we will get into at a later time. Right now we are practising these steps as the apply to a variety of problems to help us be better math communicators within our problem solving.

Math challenge:
One day Ms. Simonsen and her class were walking down the path behind the school. There was a bunch of work going on at the water treatment plant on this warm, fall day. They saw 12 workers walking into the plant, 6 trucks parked in the lot and 3 back hoes digging up dirt. Find the sum of all the items the class saw at the water treatment plant while on their walk.

Students got to experiment with a "new" program (new to them) today. Instead of writing our weekly words out in a list, students used Wordle to display their words for this lesson. They had a blast and enjoyed playing with the fonts, colours and word arrangements.

Green Form Winners

Students get recognized for good accomplishments through the use of green forms. When these green forms come home, students share them with their parents and then return the bottom portion to school to be entered into a draw. All students in class 3.2 have received a green form since the start of the year and if they returned the bottom portion, were eligible for the school wide draw that took place during today's assembly. We would like to say congratulations to the three students from class 3.2 whose names were drawn today.

Today students finished up their clue writing (with edits) and also got the opportunity to experience two new ELA pods. One is our listening centre where students listen to books on cd and respond to them. The other is the game BANG! where students practice reading spelling and daily words.

We are working on skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s. Students began by colouring multiples of 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s on a hundred chart. We will continue skip counting until we can do it forwards and backwards ;)

Today class 3.2 had the opportunity to work with Mr. Beatty while I went to work with Ms. Mortenson's class 1.3. They are beginning to do language art/guided reading stations (similar to our pods) and so we worked together to help the students create good station behaviour skills. Class 3.2 works very well in pods and I know Ms. Mortenson's class will as well. :)

Clothesline Comparison

Students played a game in order to use comparing number skills in math today. They each had a "wet" number and had to "dry" it by putting the number on the clothesline in the correct spot going least to greatest. We had some great discussions as to why a number is greater or less than another.

We are in the middle of our unit on place value in math. New websites that use skills from this unit have been added to the blog (check out sites on right side under heading "math sites"). These games are a great way to have some fun practice and build skills using place value concepts.

Comparing Numbers

Today students began investigating why a number is greater or less than another. During one of our activities, they each had a number and had to compare it to numbers of other students in the class. In their comparisons, they decided who had the least or greatest and then had to explain how they know it was the least/greatest.

Students did a terrific job during their first time working in spelling/word work pods. They participated in a SL assessment, matched vowels with words in an online spelling game and played Scrabble Slam!! The morning went by SO quickly and we had fun. :)

Pattern Bugs

We had our parent night last night at our school. In preparation, we made pattern bugs - caterpillars that have increasing or decreasing patterns. We then left them on our desks and had our visitors write the pattern rule for our caterpillars on the back of the sheet. This was a great way for us to put our math skills to work! We will check the pattern rules to see if the adults got it correct. :)

Today was our first day at the school library. We will be going every day 1 (unless there are circumstances like assemblies or field trips). Students delved into the question "What is a Community?" today in social studies. In small groups they made lists of places found in the community and then categorized these places - recreation, services, stores, medical/emergency, restaurants, etc.

Students acted as soil scientists today and did some investigating and comparing of two types of soil.

We have started off the year in math with patterning concepts. Today we explored increasing and decreasing patterns and stating pattern rules for these.

Students played an exciting game called "Addition War". It's a great game to practice our addition skills!! I could tell the students enjoyed it as there were many smiles and lots of sums being yelled out.

Writing About Ourselves

One of our back-to-school projects is to create a newspaper page about ourselves. Each student has a sheet that asks for information on a variety of subjects - favourite book, best summer memory, hero, etc. They are working very diligently on these and they will be on display soon to be shared with our school.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the parents and students of Class 3.2 - 2011-12 school year at YCS. I look forward to a year of full of learning, inquiring minds, participation, exploration and fun! The boys and girls I met today are a wonderful bunch of children whom I cannot wait to work with and get to know better. I am excited to see the progress these children will make over the next school year.
